RESUMO/ABSTRACT

The production processes of poultry slaughterhouses are responsible for a large amount of wastewater generation, which is rich in organic matter, nutrients, oils and fats. If is not properly treated it can cause environmental impacts in the final disposal. For the foregoing, besides of the search of the agroindustrial sustainability, the study case of environmental restructuring of the Cooperativa Agroindustrial Lar (CooperLar), a midsize company, located in Paraná State, southern Brazil was chosen. An exploratory and quantitative research was developed, which comprehended literature reviews, data collection and analysis of documents from the company. It was considered the period that includes the beginning of the sustainable restructuring (2009) until January 2013. The improvement of the effluent treatment plant was based on biotechnological process with the utilization of the residual biomass for power generation, biodiesel and flour production, furthermore, the enhancing of the wastewater treatment system efficiency. With the restructuring, the plant has turned an able system to treat efficiently the effluent, generating income in a joint way. It has proved that it is possible to make environmental liabilities become investment opportunity. It was possible to get flour for pet food producing, oil to produce biodiesel and still generates power energy from biogas. Therefore, it demonstrates that it is achievable to invest in the economic, social and environmental sustainability in a developing country like Brazil.
